Unveiling the Craft: A Case Study on Real-World AR Games
Welcome, fellow game enthusiasts and aspiring game designers! Today,we take a look at another case study I conducted recently.
This time I took a deep dive into real-world AR games (most of you might be familiar with Pokémon GO).
Real-world AR games use the Augmented Reality capabilities of smartphones in combination of real-world informations like location, weather, and time of day to create unique gaming experiences for the gamers who are not afraid to leave their house and explore the outsides.
Happy gaming, and let the case study begin!
Context
I was tasked to research various real-world AR games and work on 5 different tasks:
Task 1: What real-world AR games are there and what makes them fun?
Task 2: What unique opportunities do these games have?
Task 3: What unique challenges do these games have?
Task 4: Which game genres would combine well we the tech of real-world AR games?
Task 5: Design a new feature for Pokémon GO.
In the following 16-page document you can find my detailed work on these tasks. I’ve tried to explain everything in detail, so even non-designer who haven’t played these games should still get a good understanding of what goes through my mind when working on such a case study.
