Unveiling the Craft: A Case Study on AFK Arena
Welcome, fellow game enthusiasts and aspiring game designers! Today, let's embark on a journey behind the scenes of game development as we explore an integral aspect of a game designer's toolkit – the case study.
In the realm of game design, a case study serves as a detailed examination of a specific project or mechanic, offering insights into the decision-making processes, creative challenges, and solutions implemented. It's akin to a designer's journal, providing a comprehensive narrative that unveils the craft behind the games we love.
Why are Case Studies Such an Essential for Game Designers?
For game designers, case studies are not just a routine task; they are the heartbeat of their creative process. They allow designers to dissect their work (or the work of competitors), reflecting on the nuances that contributed to a game's success or posed unique challenges. More than a retrospective analysis, case studies are a proactive tool, fostering continuous improvement and growth in a designer's skill set.
Additionally, case studies have become a standard component of design tests in the application process. Prospective employers often use them to evaluate a designer's problem-solving abilities, design thinking, and how effectively they communicate their ideas. Aspiring game designers, take note – mastering the art of crafting compelling case studies is not just a professional skill; it's a valuable asset in navigating the competitive landscape of the game industry.
In my upcoming post, we'll delve into a recent case study I undertook, providing an in-depth exploration of the creative process, challenges faced, and the innovative solutions that emerged. Join me as we demystify the intricacies of game design and uncover the stories that shape the games we play.
Stay tuned for a journey into the world of game design case studies – where every decision, every challenge, and every triumph is laid bare for exploration.
Happy gaming, and let the case studies begin!
Context
I was tasked to research the game AFK Arena by Lilith Games and work on 2 different tasks:
Task 1: Analyse the games core loop, meta gameplay, and its target audience.
Task 2: Design a new game feature that caters towards the game main target audience in order to increase long-term retention.
In the following 24-page document you can find my detailed work on these tasks. I’ve tried to explain everything in detail, so even non-designer who haven’t played the game should still get a good understanding of what goes through my mind when working on such a case study.
